Afton, NY — After re-drawing the worst possible number on Wednesday night for the Short Track Super Series North Region Race Number three presented by Halmar International. Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, NY took four laps into the 50 lap contest to figure out where he had to race if he wanted to have an opportunity to win the race.

Friesen who started 12th was still in 12th on lap four and on the lap five restart Friesen took to the extreme top groove at the Afton Motorsports Park. With the next 32 laps going without a caution Friesen raced hard in the extreme top groove of the multi grooved Afton Motorsports Park surface. When the yellow did come out for debris on lap 35 Friesen was in second right behind leader Danny Creeden.

After another restart on lap 37 Friesen raced his away around Creeden in turns three and four to take the lead. Friesen then led the final 13 laps unchallenged to claim the $5,000 first place prize. Friesens's take would increase by an additional $100 as that money came from the New York State Stock Car Association for being the first NYSSCA Member to cross the finish line.

Ryan Godown who won both Short Track Series races last year at the track came from 17th to finsh second with polesitter Jeremy Smith ending up in third with Creeden fading to fourth and Ryan Jordan nipping Andy Bachetti at the line for fifth.

The American Racer Cup Sportsman 25 was all Cody Clark of Dogeleville, NY as he led all 25 laps to claim the $1,000 top prize to win over Harold Humphrey, Matt Brewer, Tim French II, and Kyle Rohner.

Dylan Robinson of Harpursville, NY led all 20 laps to claim the $200 top prize in winning the FWD Four Cylinder Stock event. Mike Robinson, Nick Kennedy, Frank Kennedy, and Michael Brown rounded out the top five.

Jeremy Smith and Nick Nye brought the field of 27 Modifieds to green with Nye leading Smith, Danny Creeden, Craig Hanson, and Ryan Jordan. A rash of early race yellow flag fever saw three caution flag periods take place over the first four laps of the 50 lap contest.

When the race resumed on lap five Nye jumped out to the lead with Smith, Creeden, Jordan, and Hanson in tow. Back behind the top five every inch of race track was being used by the talented field of drivers.

Stewart Friesen who started 12th was the first driver to show that the extreme top groove had amazing bite to it and he started picking off cars while charging to the front. Right behind Friesen was 17th place starter Ryan Godown and 25th place starter Andy Bachetti who spun out on lap two. In the middle part of the track was 14th place starter Matt Sheppard who was driving the Vic Coffey owned car and he was making tracks to the front too.

Creeden got past Smith for second on lap ten and he immediately set sail after leader Nye and the duo raced into heavy lap traffic while racing for the lead. Meanwhile Friesen made a four wide pass exiting turn four on lap ten to go from tenth to sixth.

Creeden who won the Modified feature here the previous Friday by racing in the bottom groove exclusively finally got under Nye to take the lead as the lap counter clicked to lap 18. At the same time of the pass for the lead Friesen went from sixth to fourth to continue his charge to the front.

Once in front Creeden took off from Nye and opened up a lead with now Nye left to battle with Friesen for second after Friesen took third from Smith on lap 22. Two laps later Friesen took advantage of a faltering Nye machine to take second, but he was still a full straightaway behind Creeden.

Creeden started to slow his pace, possibly due to worn out tires or a setup that started going away and this allowed Friesen to close in to within striking distance. When the yellow appeared on lap 35 for the body panel that fell off the car of JR Hurlburt in turn four, it concluded a 32 lap green flag segment.

Under Short Track Super Series rules lap cars fall to the rear on a restart and with a double file restart taking place Friesen was right along side Creeden on the start. Creeden was able to keep his lead on the restart for one lap and that is when Friesen was able to swoop around Creeden in turns three and four to grab the lead on lap 37.

Once in front Friesen moved to the bottom groove to conserve his tires and he opened up a big lead. The final caution of the event came out on lap 39 as Nye stopped in turn four with mechanical issues ending his strong run.

On the restart Friesen took off and caught Creeden napping as Smith moved into second and Godown moved into third with Bachetti now taking fifth from Jordan.

Godown got past Smith for second with six circuits remaining and that was certainly not enough time to catch the high flying Friesen.

Friesen in for the win over Godown, Smith, Creeden, and Jordan who nipped Bachetti at the line for fifth.

"We had a really good racecar tonight" said Friesen in victory lane. "It took me a few laps to let everyone figure out where they were going to run. When I got up to the top groove, I couldn't believe the bite we were getting and that allowed me to flat foot it and roll the car around the top. Once I got in front I moved to the bottom as we burned the tires up a little bit running so hard in the top groove. We've taken a break from running the NASCAR Trucks and that extra time spent working with our Modifieds has really been good for us as we have gotten much better with the Modified."

Qualifying races for the Modifieds saw Anthony Perrego, Ken Titus, Creeden and Nye win the heat races while Godown and Alex Tonkin won the consolation events.

Cody Clark and Tim French II brought the Sportsman field to green to start their 25 lap feature. Clark the current point leader at Afton jumped out to a big lead over French, Rich Ricci III, Harold Humphrey, and Kyle Rohner.

Clarks' big lead would be lost due to caution flags on laps four and five and after each start Clark would leave the competition in the dust. French was left all by himself in second while Ricci, Humphrey, Rohner were left to race for positions three, four and five.

The story during the middle portion of the feature belonged to Matt Brewer. Brewer started 11th and once he got going, he was a rocket and he joined the battle for third on lap ten.

Humphrey took second on lap 15 and set sail after Clark while French dropped back to the race for third. Brewer got tired of following everyone around on the bottom and jumped to the top groove to go from sixth to third on a lap 21 restart.

Clark in for the uncontested win over Humphrey, Brewer, French, and Rohner.

Heat races were won by AJ Digsby, Rohner, and Brewer.

Dylan Robinson and Mike Robinson brought the FWD Four Cylinder Stock feature to green to start their 20 lap feature. Dylan jumped out to the lead over Mike, Nick Kenndey, Michael Brown, and Casey McPherson.

With the Robinson Family racing for the lead all eyes focused as the Kennedy Family tried to move into third and fourth. Frank Kennedy went from sixth to fourth on lap 14 as Brown was relegated back to fifth.

The only caution of the event came out with three laps to go and on the restart the top five running order stayed the same. Dylan Robinson in for the win over Mike Robinson, Nick Kennedy, Frank Kennedy, and Brown.

Dylan Robinson won the heat race earlier in the racing program.

New Era Notes — The first day of summer certainly threw a monkey wrench into the well oiled machine of running a quick show as the longest day of the year light wise forced management into taking an extended break to let the sun set before the feature started. The Modified feature finished at 9:15 pm Wednesday night with all racing completed at 10 pm. Short Track Super Series provisionals in the feature were taken by Andy Bachetti and Rich Ricci, Jr. while Alan Barker took the track provisional. Rusty Smith broke a spindle in the consi while in a qualifying spot, ending his night. Matt Sheppards' DNF ended a string of top two finishes in his last 13 races started. Brian Krummel expired a motor ending his night in the heat race.

The next event at the Afton Motorsports Park will be Mid Season Championship Night on Friday June 30th for the Modifieds and Street Stocks, also in action will be the Open Sportsman, Crate Sportsman, and Four Cylinder Trucks. All gates open at 4pm, hot laps at 6:15 pm, and the first heat at 7 pm sharp.
